Choosing between dip treated and pressure treated fence panels

In the past, you may have gone for the 10-year guarantee dip treated panels due to the colour or whatever it was at the time. Since then you may have experienced problems which relate back to the weakness in the wood, if this is the case, we strongly recommend you go for pressure treated panels this time. The treatment is much stronger because it is forcefully injected into the timber at the factory. Manufacturers offer a 15-year guarantee on pressure-treated products due to the increased durability this process provides.

You may decide that the damaged fence panel isn’t that bad after all and you could just do a treating session to the wood to restore your panels, this may be because you have got discoloured panels or chips in the treatment which now need refreshing.

Remove the old fence panels

Remove the old panels by detaching any fasteners (screws or nails) holding them in place. If the panels are attached with brackets, unscrew or unbolt them. Once the fasteners are removed, lift the panels out of the fence posts.

Measure and mark

Measure the space between the fence posts to match the panel width which is typically 6 feet in the UK. Mark where the top and bottom of each new panel will go on the posts, and make sure the height is consistent and level.

Install the panels

The installation involves positioning, securing and repeating for each panel. Follow these steps:

  • Position the first panel - place the first new fence panel around the first two posts and use a spirit level to check it is straight
  • Attach the panel - attach the panel with brackets or fixings. If using brackets, attach to the posts, insert the panel and screw in place. If not using brackets, screw or nail the panel in place. Make sure it is aligned and adjust as needed
  • Install the remaining panels - continue with the next panels, and check alignment with the previous fence panel. Repeat the attachment steps and recheck the alignment

Final checks

Once all panels are installed check the connections and alignment to make sure everything is in place and secure.

Finishing touches

Add any post caps, finials or toppers. Paint, stain or seal the wood if the panels are dip-treated.

Wooden posts are less durable and prone to decay if untreated or if the ground is damp. But wooden posts are more traditional and easier to install or replace. Ultimately, the choice is yours, it is your budget and design choice for your fencing.

Buying fence panels at Buy Fencing Direct

At Buy Fencing Direct we have slatted fencing panels with gaps between the slats which you can assemble to form a full fence. These gaps are great for harsh weather as they allow wind and rain to pass through reducing the pressure on the fence. These panels will give you less privacy but are perfect for pet enclosures or rural properties where privacy isn’t an issue due to the distance from your neighbours.

So, navigate yourself around the website, be dazzled by the choice you've got and leave the website with your replacements! “The strongest on the market”.
